Artist Statement
The challenge always is to balance the allure of the subject matter with my own visual concerns and sense of abstraction. I use large view cameras because I find looking on the ground glass to be an exhilarating experience. On the ground glass, as I move the camera around, the world comes and goes flattening itself into pictures. Wondrous transformations often occur—small details can appear as landscapes and vast landscapes are sometimes diminished. On the ground glass everything is potentially equal.
My photographs are really records—records of the interaction between myself and the things recorded. It is my hope that the end result of this interaction—the photograph—will provide an exciting new interaction between itself and the viewer.
Process Statement
I use an 8x20-inch view camera and the now discontinued Super XX film. All prints are uncropped and are printed on gelatin silver chloride contact printing paper. All photographs printed prior to 2011 were printed on Azo paper. Current prints are make on Lodima paper, a paper I had specially manufactured in Europe.
